Registration deadline: 31 Aug 2020

The Qualifed Driver Trainer (QDT) theory module is a prerequisite for learners to attend the eight-day QDT Face-to-Face course.

It provides successful participants with the requisite knowledge to effectively plan, manage and deliver both the Defensive Driver Training (DDT) and Advanced Safe Driver Training (ASDT) courses.

Introduction

UNSSC’s Road Safety Training Programme aims to directly contribute to Pillar 3 of the UN Road Safety Strategy and SDG Goal 3, target 3.6: “By 2030, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents.” It will enable UN and associated organizations to deliver high-quality, standardized driver training in a cost-effective, sustainable manner. Successful participants will have requisite skills, knowledge and attitudes to train others on the safe, efficient and effective operation of light vehicles in a variety of contexts and risk environments.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to, within the context of driver training:

  • Explain methods of instruction;
  • Explain methods of evaluation;
  • Explain methods of coaching.

Course Methodology

The methodology used in the QDT course is based on applied behavioural psychology, experiential learning and the Goals for Driver Education (GDE) framework. Learners are encouraged throughout the course to engage in critical self-reflection to support experiential learning and behaviour change.

In this pre-requisite module for the Face-to-Face QDT module, the underpinning knowledge competencies will be imparted to learners through the following methods:

  • Self-paced learning through inter-active online sessions to form foundational knowledge and understanding
  • Facilitated webinars in small groups to discuss key concepts;
  • Case-studies to reflect how these concepts apply to driver training;
  • Self-reflection. Learners will be encouraged throughout the course to engage in self-reflection to maximize experiential learning. This is accomplished through formative discussions, learning diaries and dynamic feedback sessions during and after practical and problem-based learning activities.

Evaluation:

  • Formative evaluation will be conducted throughout the course to provide feedback, encourage honest self-assessment and highlight experiential learning opportunities.
  • Summative Evaluation is conducted through written performance checks that enable learners to demonstrate their knowledge to the required standard.

Certification:

  • This module qualifies successful participants to attend the eight-day Face-to-Face QDT training.
  • Participants must have also completed the Advanced Safe Driver Training (ASDT) or the online ASDT Theory module.
  • Once all 3 modules are complete, participants can independently deliver UNSSC’s Road Safety Programme course content.
  • Certification is conditional on learners tailoring a course training plan and delivering an driver training course (DDT or ASDT) within three months of ToT course completion.
  • Certification is valid for three years; re-certification is available through several options, including delivering a course with a Master Trainer, or having a Master Trainer observe a course as it is being delivered.
  • Summative assessment results and overall course results are rated as “Competent”, "Developing Competency", or “Not Yet Competent”. To be assessed as “Competent”, a participant must demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and attitudes in the final (summative) practical and theory assessments, and plan, deliver and review a training course within three months.

Course Contents

The QDT theory module includes the following:

  • Methods of in-car coaching
  • Methods of in-car evaluation
  • Methods of in-car and classroom-based instruction

Target Audience

Relevant administration, logistics, fleet management, training and security personnel (General Service 3 or higher) from across and beyond the UN system.
