MASTER IN ADVANCED STUDIES IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION

FEE: 15,000 CHF (1 year) or 17,000 CHF (2-3 years)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 July, 2020 (for 1 year course). Students interested in 2-3 year course can apply at various points in the academic year.
COURSE INTRODUCTION: This Master programme is a unique blended learning postgraduate course on humanitarian action. It provides current and future humanitarian professionals with the managerial, theoretical and practical skills needed to optimize responses to humanitarian crises. For the academic year 2020/21, students will complete the first term online, and then learn together in Geneva for the remainder of the course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to critically analyse humanitarian responses through a good understanding of the concepts of humanitarian action and the use of management and strategy tools to develop, coordinate and evaluate a humanitarian response.
PROGRAMME OUTLINE (STRUCTURE, MODULES):
Term One: Quality Management of Humanitarian Projects
This course addresses the essential components that guarantee the qualitative management of adapted projects and cohesive teams. It integrates fundamental principles such as inclusion, do no harm, accountability or participation into processes, methods and tools of project and people management.
Certificate of Advanced studies: 10 ECTS Credits
Duration: 11.5 weeks of online study (14 September – 4 December, 2020) Online
Term Two: Critical Analysis of Humanitarian Action
The course offers professionals a strong understanding of the contemporary humanitarian challenges through a comprehensive overview of conceptual and operational aspects of the humanitarian sector in relation to past and present crises.**
Diploma of Advanced Studies: 25 ECTS Credits
Duration: 10 weeks (18 January – 26 March, 2021) in Geneva
- Module 1: Humanitarianisms
- Module 2: Contexts, Actions and Consequences
- Module 3: Revisiting Vulnerability and Needs
- Module 4: Humanitarian Governance, Norms and Principles
- Module 5: The Humanitarians
Term Three: Implementation of Humanitarian Projects
Selection of five elective courses from the following list:
- Participatory Approaches with Crisis-Affected Communities
- Designing an Advocacy Strategy for Humanitarian Action
- Media and Humanitarian Action
- Non-communicable Diseases in Humanitarian Contexts
- Climate emergency and its impacts on Health
- Negotiation in Humanitarian Crises
- Protection in Humanitarian Action
- Sexual and Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Crises
- Livelihood and Cash Transfer Interventions in Humanitarian Action
- Health Systems Assessment in Humanitarian Crises
(Certificate of Advanced Studies: 10 ECTS Credits)
Duration: April-August, in Geneva
Term four: Workshops and dissertation (15 ECTS Credits) in Geneva.
Dissertation work:
- A series of 14 online workshops organised from September to January to help students design their dissertation project (5 ECTS credits).
- Completion of MAS dissertation by August 2021 (10 ECTS credits).
